The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) celebrates its 12th Year Anniversary, with the theme “Empowering the Filipino through Innovative Engagement”, which will highlight the council’s programs and initiatives for public engagement.

As one of the funded research projects, delegates of the Pathogen-Host-Environment Interactions Research Laboratory (PHEIRL) attended their main event last June 21. Laurice Beatrice Raphaelle O. dela Peña and Mae Ashley G. Nacario represented PHEIRL and its funded research project, “Microbial Source Tracking (MST) in Selected Tributaries of Laguna Lake, Philippines”.

The MST project was implemented in 2017 – 2020 as part of the program SCALE or Synergistic Capacity Advancement in the Management of Laguna lake led by Dr. Mylene Cayetano of Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM). It aimed to identify sources of pollution in the lake using different culture-based and molecular methods in microbial source tracking.

In this event, Dr. Cayetano highlighted how the program was able to impart its output by public engagement through writing policy briefs, hosting fora, and conducting training for capacity-building.
